Tips for Parents
There are many things parents can do to help their little 'spongeheads' critically view television. Parents are reminded that they can also limit childrens' screen time.
That 'screen time' - television and computer - is a reality of our current era. Rather than having media take advantage of our kids, we can take advantage of 'teachable moments' in which we can show our children how media works.
TV AND THE COMPUTER ARE JUST APPLIANCES!
Turn it on when you need something from it. Unlike the refirigerator, it doesn't need to be on all the time.
ADULTS ARE ADULTS
Yours is the hand that ultimately controls the remote. Recognizing he 'sponginess' of our children, you should have no hesitation in deciding what is best and then finding clever ways to make that way work in your family.
ADVERTISERS REALIZE that children are the most direct route to their parents' wallets. Whining and cajoling are what the commercials urge children to do.
BOGUS ADVERTISING CLAIMS
Take an afternoon and encourage your children to recreate an advertising claim. You may be buried in creal boxes or catsup bottles, but the experience will be fun and informative.
ADVERTISERS DON'T LOVE YOUR CHILDREN!
Advertisers do love your credit cards. They know how to inspire whining and wheedling. We need to remind our children that the people who make commercials are paid lots of money to make us feel like 'stuff' will make us happy and cool, in short...
ADVERTISING WORKS...UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW IT SPINS ITS MAGIC
NOT IN THE BEDROOM!
There is a direct link between screen time and obesity that is increasingly clear. If a child has a television in his or her bedroom, the risk for obesity increases 31% for every hour viewed per day. Sitting in front of a screen is simply a health hazard. It is time your child is not being active.
TV IS NOT FREE
It is paid for by the advertisers targeting our children and our wallets.
TV COUPONS: DESIGN AND PRINT YOUR OWN TO MANAGE TV CONSUMPTION
Allocate a certain number of coupons per week (depending on how much viewing you think is good for your child). Coupons can be redeemed for a show or for cash as an incentive to view less and play more.
PLAN FAMILY TV VIEWING
as a positive event, like an outing. Look forward to it, do it together, and talk about it afterwards. You will be surprised how many teachable moments a little entertainment offers!
